Abstract Richard Cordley began working as a pastor in 1857, working in Lawrence at the Plymouth Congregational Church. The congregation moved into its first permanent building, called the "Stone Church," though not completed until 1862. Cordley was an abolitionist and supported the free state movement. During the American Civil War, several members were killed by pro-Confederate forces led by William Quantrill in the Lawrence Massacre of 1863. Cordley's home was burned, but the church building...

Abstract The Congregational Church of South Hadley Falls began as the South Society in South Hadley when, in February of 1824, the population removed from the center of South Hadley felt they needed a more conveniently located church. Later that year, the Society united in a church organization called The South Church of Christ in South Hadley. The church did not become known as The Congregational Church of South Hadley Falls until 1918. The congregation voted to close in 2012 due to declining...

Stoneham, Mass. First Congregational Church records, 1728-1889.

Abstract The town of Stoneham was incorporated in 1725. A vote in 1726 provided for the building of a meetinghouse and the First Congregational Church was organized in 1729. The first pastor was Rev. James Osgood who was ordained in September 1729. Rev. John Cleaveland was pastor from 1785 until an ecclesiastical council dissolved his relationship with the town in 1894. Scope and Contents

This collection contains diaries (journals), extracts from sermons, readings, and letters from 1793-1835. Contained in 8 handmade books. One letter contains an essay entitled "On the Millenium" which mentions Jonathan Edwards. One journal is an arithmatic book attributed to "Sukey Counce Hunt." Also contains correspondence between the author's parents, Mary (Counce) Hunt and Daniel Hunt, which chronicles life in Boston during British occupation, and a diary of Mary Hunt's.
